smart goals
SMART is an acronym for a goal that is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-limited. These goals are useful because they allow one to take an in-depth look at their goals and plan how they will achieve them. Basically, one sets a goal, plans out how to achieve the goal, sticks to the plan, and finally, reaches the goal.
1. I will not miss any classes next semester until April 2015, unless it is an extreme case, such as, severe illness or dangerous road conditions. I want to be present for all my classes next semester so I can make certain I understand the content of every course. I will ensure I eat a healthy, well-balanced diet, get lots of sleep, and participate in regular physical activity to avoid sickness. I will also make sure I continuously disinfect my hands when in a health care or clinical setting to prevent obtaining illness. I want to achieve this goal because I missed a lot of classes first semester and I know it related to my poor grades. If I do not go to class, I do not learn well. I learn best from listening and talking about the content.

2. I will achieve an overall average of at least 75% in all my courses in the nursing curriculum next semester for April 31, 2015. I will attend all my lectures and seminars, watch my online lectures, take notes, ask for help when required, complete the necessary readings, and study for tests to achieve this goal. I learn best from repeated exposure to information to get that information into my long-term memory. If I go to all my classes, do all my work, and complete the readings associated with each course, I know I will be exposed to the content enough to remember and understand. Also, if I still do not understand the content I will ask questions and get a tutor if it comes to that to achieve this goal. I want to achieve this goal because I take pride in good grades and it makes me feel like I accomplished something. I did not do so well first semester and I would like to change that. I understand the knowledge is important for my future in nursing and I want to make sure I learn what is needed to have a successful career.
3 smart goals as of April 2015 (NURs 1020)![]()
1. I will establish a therapeutic nurse-resident relationship through effective communication with my residents by the end of this clinical placement (April 7, 2015). I will know I have reached this goal by maintaining professional boundaries, ensuring trust between myself and the residents, showing empathy, being aware of myself and my personal biases or opinions, and being aware of the ethics involved in health care. I will go through the 3 phases of a therapeutic relationship: the orientation phase, working phase, and resolution phase. In the orientation phase, I will gather background information on my residents and gain knowledge of health, illness, the health care systems and associated policies, culture, interpersonal skills, and myself. I will go through the working phase by continuously using effective communication, maintaining trust, and always following client-centered care. I will then end the relationship at the end of the placement. This relates to the first NURS 1020 objective: "Established therapeutic nurse-resident relationships in residential long-term care settings" (Tyerman, J., 2015).
2. I will provide client-centered support by always including the resident in their activities of daily living by following their preferences, allowing them to help as much as they can in their care, and respecting their right to choice until the end of my clinical placement. This goal relates to the fourth NURS 1020 objective: "demonstrated skills in providing (resident) client-centered support for activities of daily living" (Tyerman, 2015). 3. I will understand the risks associated with skin integrity in the elderly and assess the resident's skin for any new signs of skin breakdown and new signs associated with any pre-existing skin integrity issues until the end of my clinical placement and continue to do so in my future career in the health care field. I will gain knowledge by attending my lectures in NURS 1002 on healthy aging and attending my integumentary system lab in NURS 1020. Paying attention and asking questions in these classes will help me understand the theory behind this issue. I will then further this knowledge by taking it to clinical practice. This goal relates to the third NURS 1020 objective: "Developed and demonstrated skills in basic assessment techniques relevant to the long-term care population" (Tyerman, 2015). |
Two Goals for NURS 2021 placement
These goals are difficult to address because at this point I do not know for sure where my placement will be. It will either be in mental health or in maternity within a hospital. So, I will complete a goal for each.
Maternity Placement
To complete full vital signs (BP, HR, temperature, respiration's) at least 15 times on newborn infants by the end of the clinical rotation. I believe this is important because taking blood pressure and other vital signs is something I will most likely do for the rest of my life and is a basic nursing skill and practice is everything.
Mental Health Placement
To develop knowledge on the multiple mental disorders (depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder etc.) involving the assessment, nursing interventions, and treatment of such disorders by the end of the clinical rotation. I believe having knowledge on the mental disorders is essential in this placement in order to provide exceptional care. I also think it is important to have knowledge to assess my own personal biases and judgments and ensure they are not involved in the care I am providing.
Another goal I have for either placement is to reduce my stress and anxiety levels through trying new strategies such as yoga and mediation and see a change by the end of placement.
